What type of therapy do you offer?

All of our programs are based on principles of Cognitive and Behavioural Therapy (CBT). This is a highly regarded intervention for signs and symptoms of depression and/or anxiety with lots of research and clinical evidence to support its use. Your individual therapist will discuss with you which type of CBT might be most useful for your circumstance.

Do I need a Mental Health Care Plan to access this program?

No, you don’t need a Mental Health Care Plan to access our program.

I’m already seeing a therapist (or counsellor or psychologist) elsewhere. Can I enrol in your program too?

We think an important part of understanding how to maintain your health is knowing what is actually helping and what isn’t. When you engage with multiple types of therapy concurrently, it can become confusing for you to figure out which one is/isn’t helping so we recommend that you only engage with one type of mental health treatment at any time. Come to us when you’re ready, though!

What will the first session be like?

The first session with your therapist is an opportunity for you to share what you are experiencing at the moment and how this is impacting different aspects of your life. Your therapist will ask you questions to make sure they understand correctly and are in the best place to support you throughout the program, before making a tailored recommendation about how to proceed. You may also get some ‘homework’ activities or readings to make sure you’re well prepared from the start.

Is it just talking therapy?

No! You will be learning practical skills and gaining valuable understanding about mental health (as well as mental illness) so that you can overcome what you’re experiencing. DIY Happy is all about giving you the skills, understanding and confidence to be able to do it on your own.

How involved will I be in decisions about my program?

You’ll be very involved. Your therapist will be there to guide and support you every step of the way. Although, it will actually be you in the driver’s seat! We see this as a really important aspect of teaching you how to cope with challenges and learn how to maintain the gains for the long term.

By teaching me how to look after my own mental health, aren’t you essentially doing yourself out of a job?

Yes! And that’s entirely the point. We are proud to be able to do ourselves out of our jobs each day, one mentally-healthy person at a time. At DIY Happy, we’re interested in building healthier Australians. We aim to equip you with the knowledge and skills to be able to take greater ownership of your health and wellbeing so that you can look after it independently and proactively.

Who is eligible to enrol in your program?

  • Living in Australia
  • 18 years +
  • Experiencing signs or symptoms of things such as depression, anxiety, stress, grief, separation, panic attacks, tiredness, low motivation, difficulty sleeping, or other mental health concerns which are impacting the quality of life now
  • NOT experiencing a mental health crisis. DIY Happy is not a crisis support service. If you intend to take action on thoughts of suicide, contact emergency services on 000 or Lifeline on 13 11 14.
